On an Audi specifically
Manual Audi models use a dual-mass flywheel, which wears along with the clutch and should be checked whenever the gearbox is out. On S tronic cars a new clutch pack has to be measured and set up on fitting, then adapted through diagnostics. Skip the adaptation and the new clutch will judder like the old one.

How do I know my clutch is slipping?
In a high gear at low revs, press the accelerator firmly. If the revs jump but the car does not pull, the clutch is slipping. A burning smell after slow traffic or a ramp is another sign.
How long does a clutch replacement take?
Usually one to two working days once the parts are in hand. The gearbox has to be removed, and on quattro cars there is more to disconnect. Ordered parts or a worn flywheel can add time.
Should the flywheel be replaced with the clutch?
Only if it is worn. A dual-mass flywheel with too much play, heat cracks or a rattle at idle should be replaced while the gearbox is out. Fitting a new clutch to a failed flywheel wastes the work.
Does an automatic Audi have a clutch?
S tronic cars have two clutches inside the gearbox, and these wear over time, faster in stop-start traffic. Tiptronic automatics use a torque converter instead of a clutch you replace as a service item.
