What to know about the SQ8 Sportback e-tron battery

An SQ8 Sportback e-tron with a full traction battery can still refuse to switch on. The 12V battery powers the locks, screens and the contactors that connect the main pack. When it fails the car looks completely dead. Replacing it is a normal 12V job and does not touch the high-voltage system.

The SQ8 Sportback e-tron is fully electric. Everything on this page refers to its 12V battery, the one that wakes the car up. The high-voltage traction battery is a separate system that we do not service.

As an S or RS model, the SQ8 Sportback e-tron runs bigger cooling fans, pumps and audio than the standard car, so it should get the AGM battery at the upper end of the capacity range, not the cheapest one that fits.

The Sportback body changes the boot shape and trim, not the battery. Access and fitting time are the same as the standard SQ8 Sportback e-tron.

Does the SQ8 Sportback e-tron have a normal car battery?

Yes, a 12V AGM battery at the front. It runs the low-voltage systems and is charged from the main pack. It wears out like any other battery, typically after a few UAE summers.

My SQ8 Sportback e-tron will not unlock or switch on. Is it the 12V battery?

That is the most common cause. Use the mechanical key to get in. We can power the 12V system, confirm with a test and replace the battery on site.

Which battery does my Audi need, AGM or EFB?

If your Audi has start-stop, it needs AGM or EFB, and most larger models need AGM. We check by model, year and the label on the old battery, then fit the same technology or better.

Where is the battery in my Audi?

It depends on the model. A3, Q2 and Q3 carry it in the engine bay. A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and Q5 usually have it under the boot floor. The first Q7 has it under a front seat. Our technician will know before arriving.
