What to know about the S8L battery

An S8L has more electronics awake at any moment than most cars have in total, so it is unforgiving about battery quality. It wants a full-size AGM, registered correctly. On chauffeur-driven cars that idle with the cabin running, we see batteries worn out by cycling rather than by age.

As an S or RS model, the S8L runs bigger cooling fans, pumps and audio than the standard car, so it should get the AGM battery at the upper end of the capacity range, not the cheapest one that fits.

The S8L is a long-wheelbase version, mostly built for the Chinese market. Some reach the UAE as private imports. The battery and coding process match the standard-wheelbase car, though we confirm the part against the chassis number.

Where is the battery on an Audi S8L?

The A8 battery is under the luggage compartment floor, beneath the spare wheel area and a metal bracket held by four bolts. Some versions have a second, smaller auxiliary battery.

Does the S8L have two batteries?

Many do in some form. All have the main 12V AGM in the boot. D5 mild hybrids add a 48V lithium-ion battery, and some versions carry a small auxiliary battery. We test what is fitted and replace only the 12V units.

Is it safe to replace an S8L battery outside a workshop?

Yes, when it is done with a memory keeper and coded afterwards. That is how we do every one. The job needs space behind the car and about 45 minutes.

Where is the battery in my Audi?

It depends on the model. A3, Q2 and Q3 carry it in the engine bay. A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and Q5 usually have it under the boot floor. The first Q7 has it under a front seat. Our technician will know before arriving.

Can you come to a basement or tower car park?

Yes. Most of our Dubai jobs are in basements and podium car parks. The technician carries the battery and tools in by hand if the van cannot enter. Tell security a service visit is coming.
